Anyway, this is the answer I gave him on how a greenhouse works. Greenhouses work by allowing the sun's rays, or solar energy, to enter through the clear roof and walls and warm up the inside of the building. An example of this that you and I deal with all the time in the summer is our cars. You know how hot it gets inside the car when you leave it in a sunny spot all day. Sometimes I have seen my car temperature reach about 120F. This is hot! But, a greenhouse works in the exact same way. There are really 2 types of greenhouses: Coldhouse and Hothouse. Basically, the hothouse will have a heater installed to ensure the temp never drops below freezing. This is the case in the winter months when the sun goes down. A coldhouse is just a glass greenhouse without the heating system. The process of how the plants capture the suns energy and turn it into their own energy (sugar) is called photosynthesis. So, essentially all the greenhouse is doing is allowing the plants to capture more sunlight and increase their growing time. There are a few things to worry about with a greenhouse, though. You must control the humidity. There are normally windows in the ceiling you can slightly open to let out some of the heat. After all, you aren't growing tropical plants and trying to setup a rainforest. You just want the tomatoes a little faster than normal. You also need to worry about the watering system: How to get it there and how to remove it. There definitely needs some thought into how the drainage is going to be established. All of these are the items I told my son about, and I think he understands it a bit better. Of course, now he thinks we can just slap one together in a matter of minutes and have a huge garden.
